My Photography Story
On a cold December night in 1997, I woke up in a charter bus crossing the state of Texas. I was seven then, and as I looked out the window, colorful neon signs told me we were no longer in Mexico. I remember my toes feeling numb, but at least no longer cold. My grandmother who sat next to me, had her eyes tightly shut, so I closed my eyes too to wait for the morning.
The above is a keen recollection of a trip that changed everything for me. One my grandparents talked about often, with a sense of anticipation, and apprehension. We would leave behind all the things we were used to: las tortillas, la familia, las fiestas. Twelve years later, I was finally able to visit my country of origin for the first time since I left. Living in Mexico had never been easy, yet I had largely forgotten of the beauty, and pace, of everyday life there: The elderly park vendor, resting against his popsicle cart, patiently waiting for kids to come by; the young couple in love, sitting on a park bench tossing bread crumbs at the doves flying around them; the colorful homes decorating a hill, each of a bright, happy color. As I rediscovered my culture, I photographed people and places I'd almost forgotten, to preserve and give meaning to the stories they told. I returned to the States with hundreds of photos and used some for a school presentation... "I didn't know you were a photographer!" I'd later hear from teachers and classmates. "Neither did I!”, I'd respond, halfway joking, and halfway excited about a newly found interest that would later become a huge part of my life. Thank you for reading my personal story, I look forward to capturing yours! Luis Ruiz |
